Budapest Thermal Baths: Why I Was Glad I Packed a Swimsuit for My Viking River Cruise

When I packed for my Viking River Cruise through Eastern Europe, a bathing suit almost didn’t make it into my suitcase.
River cruises are not exactly beach vacations. Most packing lists focus on comfortable walking shoes, layers for changing weather, rain gear, and excursion essentials. A swimsuit felt like one of those “just in case” items that would probably take up space and never get used.
I’m glad I packed it anyway.
One of the unexpected highlights of my trip was experiencing the famous Budapest thermal baths. While the swimsuit only occupied a tiny corner of my suitcase, it gave me the flexibility to enjoy one of the region’s most unique cultural experiences.
Should You Pack a Swimsuit for a Viking River Cruise?
Yes, if your Viking River Cruise itinerary includes Budapest, pack a swimsuit.
Many travelers don’t realize that visiting the Budapest thermal baths is one of the city’s most popular activities. Having a swimsuit allows you to take advantage of the opportunity without scrambling to purchase one while traveling.

Why a Swimsuit Didn’t Seem Necessary
Before the trip, I spent plenty of time researching what to pack for a Viking River Cruise.
Most recommendations focused on:
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Lightweight layers
- Rain protection
- Day bags for excursions
- Travel adapters and electronics
A swimsuit rarely appeared near the top of anyone’s list.
That made sense. After all, a river cruise through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania doesn’t immediately bring swimming pools and spas to mind.
As a result, my swimsuit was almost left behind.
The Budapest Thermal Baths Were Worth Experiencing
Budapest is home to several historic bathhouses where visitors can relax in mineral-rich thermal waters. These baths are a significant part of local culture and attract both tourists and residents throughout the year.
The most well-known options include:
- Széchenyi Thermal Bath
- Gellért Thermal Bath
- Rudas Baths
Whether you choose one of the large outdoor pools at Széchenyi or a more historic experience elsewhere, visiting the Budapest thermal baths offers something very different from the typical sightseeing itinerary.

Why I’m Glad I Packed a Swimsuit
The biggest benefit was flexibility.
Travel often presents unexpected opportunities, and this was one of them. Having a swimsuit meant I could take advantage of free time in Budapest without any additional planning. Instead of wishing I had packed one, I was able to enjoy one of the city’s most unique experiences on a whim. For such a small item, it ended up being well worth the space in my suitcase. Instead of debating whether the experience was worth the hassle of finding swimwear locally, I already had everything I needed.
Our Hotel Made a Swimsuit Even More Useful
Even if you don’t plan to visit one of Budapest’s famous public bathhouses, a swimsuit can still come in handy. We stayed at the Corinthia Budapest Hotel, which includes access to the Royal Spa with many room rates. After long days of walking and sightseeing, having the option to relax in the spa’s pools, saunas, and wellness facilities was a welcome bonus. Because I had packed a swimsuit, I didn’t have to think twice about taking advantage of the amenity. If you’re staying at a hotel with a spa, bringing a swimsuit gives you even more opportunities to use it during your trip.
What Else You May Want to Bring
If you’re planning to visit the Budapest thermal baths, consider packing a few additional items:
Waterproof Phone Pouch
Helpful if you want photos while protecting your phone from water.
Flip-Flops or Sandals
Easy to slip on around the bath facilities. These have great arch support and can be worn with a nicer outfit as well.
Lightweight Cover-Up
This might be something I would skip, but if you prefer to be covered up, it’s useful when moving between pools or changing areas.
Small Waterproof Bag
Convenient for storing wet items afterward.
Towel
Many thermal baths sell souvenir towels for you to use. However, they can be a bit pricey. A lot of people bring a hotel towel, but if you want your own towel or think you’ll need one at another point in your trip, this one is very useful and easy to carry.

Who Should Pack a Swimsuit for a Viking River Cruise?
You should strongly consider bringing a swimsuit if:
- Your itinerary includes Budapest
- You are adding a pre- or post-cruise extension
- You enjoy spas and wellness experiences
- You prefer having flexibility while traveling
If none of those apply, you may never use it.
For me, however, it turned out to be one of those low-space, high-value items that earned its place in my suitcase.
Don’t Overlook This Packing List Item
When people think about packing for a Viking River Cruise, they usually focus on shoes, jackets, and excursion gear.
Those items are important, but sometimes the most memorable travel experiences come from the things you almost leave behind.
My swimsuit took up very little space, but it gave me the opportunity to experience the Budapest thermal baths, one of the most distinctive attractions in Eastern Europe.
If Budapest is on your itinerary, I would pack one again without hesitation.
