Santa Fe: The Perfect Weekend Getaway

Santa Fe New Mexico is the perfect location for a mini vacation or weekend getaway. Founded in 1610 and sitting at 7199 ft this high desert state capital is unlike any town in the US. Its downtown core is Adobe clad and reminiscent of its early days. With a population of 87,505, it’s small enough to explore in just a few days but big enough to have a wide variety of sites and activities. From skiing and hiking to art studios and centuries-old buildings Santa Fe has a little something for everyone. Where We Stayed As decades-long Marriot Bonvoy members, we always check Marriott properties first whenever we are looking…

    Cancun: All-Inclusive vs. Traditional Resorts

In January I attended a conference at an all-inclusive resort in Cancun. It was my first time traveling to Cancun and my second time staying at an all-inclusive resort. It seems crazy to admit now, but at the time I wasn’t looking forward to a mid-winter break in the Caribbean (yeah, I know). The negative news coverage about boot-legged liquor, sketchy cab drivers, and Americans getting drugged and assaulted at resorts had shown up on my news feed too many times over the past few years. It all seemed like too much risk for too little reward. I’m happy to report that (as with most things) getting over your fears…

Pittsburgh: A Weekend Full of Surprises

Last year we went on a college visit with our son to Carnegie Mellon University. We had a great but quick weekend in Pittsburgh, and all three of us were surprised by how much we enjoyed our stay in Pittsburgh. Ultimately he decided to attend Johns Hopkins in Baltimore but he was honestly torn when making the decision, and it had a lot to do with how much he enjoyed Pittsburgh. In honor of that trip one year ago I decided to finally publish the post I wrote back in February 2018. When our son told us that he wanted to visit Carnegie Mellon University I had very mixed feelings.…

Two Wins and a Loss in Shreveport

For those of us who call the Dallas area home Shreveport is an unremarkable and forgettable pass-through town on the way to the Gulf Coast. The casino-hotels dotting the river are a bygone reminder of the days when us Texas folks would flock to Louisiana for a weekend of gambling. I never considered Shreveport a potential destination for anything but sometimes work and life take you places you never expect to go and if you travel with an open mind you might actually have some fun along the way. Last week we had a work meeting in Shreveport and I challenged my local work friends to change my mind about…

    Wandering With A Purpose

Hi! Welcome to Wandering With A Purpose. Thank you so much stopping by. I am breaking every blogging rule by launching this site with only one post. I finally realized that if I waited until everything was “perfect” or waited until I had the “recommended” number of content pieces that I would probably never, ever launch this site. I am in the process of creating great content about my travels, how to balance travel, work and family, how to enjoy life when you aren’t packing a suitcase and how to appreciate the life and home that you have so that you always want to come home. In the meantime follow…

    Travel Obsession

I’ve been obsessed with travel my entire life. My 6th grade geography project was to plan a trip to Europe including flights, budget, hotels and a full sightseeing itinerary. From that moment I was hooked and I’ve been planning and traveling to destinations near and far for over 30 years. Do you dream of traveling but aren’t sure where to start? Are you afraid you can’t afford to travel or can’t fit travel into the middle of your busy life? Do you want to see new places but wish you had practical advice about finding hotels, flights and transportation? Do you have a credit card in your wallet and wonder…
